Massimo Mastrorillo

Massimo Mastrorillo

Massimo Mastrorillo has studied at the University of Perugia, in Italy, and is a graduate of the European Institute of Design in Rome.

He works mainly on long term documentary projects, devoting himself to the deep consequences of war and natural disasters and their aftermaths on society.

Among his major projects: “Mozambique a Nation Balanced Between Poverty and Dream,” “Kurds: People in Exile,” “Indonesia: Just Another Day”, “White Murder” and “Temporary?Landscapes.” Since for the first time in human history, the number of city inhabitants worldwide overtook those living in the countryside, Mastrorillo decided to work on his personal project “The Width of the Line” (2005-2007) about 9 global cities.

His work has appeared in numerous national and international magazines. He has worked with the NGO’s Medicins sans Frontiers and Sant’Egidio community. Mastrorillo’s projects has been exhibited and shown at festivals and galleries worldwide icluding the Noordelicht Foundation, the Museum der Europaischen Berlin, FNAC and VISA Perpignan.

His major awards include: World Press Photo, Pictures of the Year International (POYi) and the Best of Photojournalism, Magazine Photographer of the Year, FNAC “Attenzione Talento Fotografico”, the International Photographer of the Year at the 5th Annual Lucie Awards, the PDN annual, the Sony World Photography Awards and an Aftermath Grant (finalist, 2011).

Currently Mastrorillo is working on his next project “Bosnia and Herzegovina: if chaos awakens the madness”.

Mastrorillo recently founded the collective MASTODON, with Canadian photographer Donald Weber and writer Larry Frolick. They are working on “Life After Zero Hour,” a project about the consequences of the nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan and “Small Pieces of Paper”, a project about the seizure of the Italian Mafias’ properties.

Massimo is based in Rome and he is a Professor of Documentary Picture at the Scuola Romana di Fotografia.
